Frailty Expert Day

Utrecht, The Netherlands 2025

Together with Profs Bauer, van Loon, Jack Bell & Maria Soto-Martin, it was great to speak about the important role & evidence for the diet, protein & timely medical nutrition for the nutritional management of frailty and importantly:

  • Focus on implementation of evidence & guidelines for older people

  • To screen, treat, monitor, keeping it simple, pragmatic, effective

  • To empower others to act & embed in pathways of care to prevent & treat.

One of the conclusions of my first lecture in PENSA 2025 Singapore is that 'Nutritional support, including the use of oral nutritional supplements, needs to be embedded into clinical practice. Pathways of care are needed to enable 'non-nutrition expert' clinicians to identify malnutrition & use nutritional support appropriately'. It was also super to give a plenary lecture on the UK’s progress on malnutrition.

Listening to many other experts at PENSA, I remain amazed at the power of nutritional support to make a difference to patients' lives - so much evidence, so many guidelines... but still a job to be done to make sure medical nutrition is fully integrated into everyday practice.

It’s always a privilege to talk about evidence & the difference medical nutrition can make in older frail people at risk of malnutrition. Even greater to share this at EuGMS 2025 to drive the change in practice we need together with geriatricians.
Thanks to my fellow speakers Tommy Cederholm & Prof Rainer Wirth for emphasizing the importance of nutritional screening, assessment & early targeted intervention in geriatric practice

It was great to present our national malnutrition surveys at ESPEN 2025 which highlighted:

              • The continued high prevalence of disease related malnutrition in Britain across settings & patient groups over 4 years of surveys

              • The ongoing need to make sure the right nutritional care medical nutrition dietitian follows screening MUST, fully integrated into clinical practice so we can improve outcomes cost effectively.
